Hey OK, I said I wouldn‘t talk about MLP here but I can‘t leave this matter uncommented. So instead of talking about how I discovered the show and what is on my mind about the whole Brony-culture, I put down my Top 10 episodes of both seasons. I also wrote down what is so special about every of them and why I like them. This is my personal Top 10, when you have another opinion, I‘d like to read it in the comments. And I am making my way up from #10 to #01 to make it more thrilling for you to read. So jump into the list and read why MLP is so special. But I warm you, SPOILER WARNING EXTREME!!!
#10 Swarm of the Century (S01E10)
Fluttershy is picking flowers in the forest for Princess Celestia’s visit of Ponyville. There she finds a weird little bug which suddenly starts multiply really fast. Just like the Tribbles in Star Trek: TOS. Pinkie Pie recognizes them as Parasprites and starts acting weird by collecting music instruments. Very soon the Parasprites have multiplied so often that the whole village is full of them. They try to get rid of this pest but nothing they do helps. In the end it is Pinkie who solves the situation by playing music and making the Parasprites follow her. I like Pinkie here a lot. Everybody seems to ignore her because they expect her to do the normal Pinkie weird-stuff. But she knew about the critters all the time and gets underestimated the whole time. I also love the Parasprites who actually multiply by punking after a eating a lot.
#09 May the Best Pet Wind (S02E07)
Rainbow Dash wants to get her very own pet. So she starts a competition between some really cool animals. And a turtle… erm tortoise. Her pet has to be cool, awesome, radical and at least as fast as she. In the end it is the tortoise who gets picked from her because Tank (as she calls it later on) helps her in a dangerous situation. This episode is really fast paced which is really rare throughtout the show. And it contains a lot of visual comedy. And I really so love the „Find a Pet“-Song because Rainbow Dash doesn‘t sing very often.
#08 It’s About Time (S02E20)
Twilight Sparkle gets visited by her future self (from next Tuesday). Future-Twilight wants to say something but has not enough time to finish her sentence. Current-Twilight now starts to take all measure possible to prevent a big catastrophy to happen cause she thinks Future-Twilight wanted to talk about that. In fact she makes everything worse eventually. This episode is special because it caused a big discussion about time paradoxes and time loops and stuff. And it features Einstein’s theory of relativity written on a chalkboard. This also is a great Twilight-freaks-out-like-totally-episode. And Future-Spike has to deal with his very own problem in the end.
#07 A Bird in the Hoof (S01E22)
Princess Celestia visits Ponyville and brings her pet bird with her. Fluttershy sees that the bird is in real bad shape and starts to take care about it. No matter what she tries, Feathermina won‘t get any better. It keeps coughing and losing more and more feathers. The way the bird interacts with the Ponies is just brilliant. The timing of the jokes is simply perfect. And we also see the kind and helpful character of Fluttershy. And of course we have a bunch of Pinkie Pie moments!
#06 Lesson Zero (S02E03)
Twilight Sparkle is worried because she hasn‘t written a letter to Princess Celestia that week. She is afraid to be put in Magic Kindergarden because of that. There was no problem with friendship so far so she couldn‘t write a letter. She comes up with the idea to create a problem that she can solve and so have something to write about. The longer she tries to create this situation and the more she loses control over it the weirder her faces get.
#05 Secret of my Excess (S02E10)
It’s Spike’s birthday. He suddenly gets real demanding and starts to steal and collect all kinds of stuff. The day after his birthday Twilight notices that Spike had grown over night. She takes him to the vet and the doctor but nopony seems to know what is going on with with Spikeywhikey. Only Zecora knows that he had found the true nature of dragons to collect all kind of stuff and the more stuff he wants to have, the bigger he gets. In the end he is as big as Godzilla and just grabs Rarity (which he has a crush on) and takes her up a mountain. She eventually reminds her of his old self and he changes back from Monster-Spike to Normal-Spike. This episode feels like an old Japanese monster movie and even covers the motive of King Kong who also steals a human woman and takes her up a skyscraper.
#04 Green isn‘t your Color (S01E20)
Fluttershy becomes a fashion model. And Rarity is really jealous about this but don‘t wants to hurt Fluttershy’s feelings. The whole episode is about keeping secrets. It introduces the so called Pinkie Promise:
Cross my heart and hope to fly
stick a cupcake in my eye
You never break a Pinkie Promise. We also meet a new Pony called Photo Finish. She is the photographer who discovers Flootershai. She has a hard German accent and the way she acts is just so over the top. This episode also contains the weirdest Pinkie Pie moments in both seasons. She reminds Twilight to keep secrets and appears in the most unexpected places like in a buckit of sponges. FOREVAH!
#03 Bridle Gossip (S01E09)
Zecora, a mysterious Zebra, comes to Ponyville and scares the shit out of the Ponies. Little Applebloom doesn‘t believe all the spooky stories and follows Zecora into the forest. The Mane 6 confront Zecora and take Applebloom back home. The next day everypony is changed due to a „curse“. This episode shows Pinkie Pie at her best. She makes a rhyme about Zecora which is just awesomly funny. And the curses everypony has to deal with it are crazy, crazy, crazy! Especially Fluttershy who later has to recite Pinkies Song in her very own way.
#02 A Canterlot Wedding (S02E25/26)
The Mane 6 is invited to the royal wedding of Twilight Sparkle’s brother Shining Armor. But Canterlot had recently received a threat and everypony there is alarmed. Twilight meets her old fole-sitter Princes Cadence who is about to marry her brother but she doesn‘t recognize Twilight anymore. Twilight has a bad feeling about her old friennd and confronts everypony with her thoughts. Cadence then reveals herself to be evil and bans Twilight into a dark cave where she meets the real Princess Cadence. In fact the evil Princess is the queen of the Changelings, a race of black insect-winged Ponies. The second episode contains an awesomly funny fight sequence between the Mane 6 and the army of Changelings. This fight sequence and the overall Disney look-and-feel make this two episodes really special. After I had finished the first season, I immediatly watched this season finale and for the first time I was no longer unsure I would like this show.
#01 Party of One (S01E25)
Pinkie Pie likes to party. We know that. But one day nopony seems to want to come to her parties anymore. She thinks that her friends don‘t like her anymore and gets really sad. The part where Pinkie sets up her own friends (a pile of dust, a bunch of rocks, a sack of flour and a buckit of turnips) and starts to pretend that they are actually alive is just crazy. The way the whole scene is designed with all that weird background colors and crazy faces Pinkie is making is so totally over the top. Actually the scene reminded me of classic cartoon shows like Ren & Stimpy. I did not expect such crazy stuff to appear in a kids‘ (and especially a girls‘) cartoon. This was the very first episode (and this is the episode before the last one) that I really enjoyed over the whole ~ 22 minutes. I had a lot of fun, laughed my ass off while Pinkie sneaked through Ponyville and enjoyed it when she made up her own party guests.
I had a rough start with MLP, too. I first watched the first 3 episodes and the show just annoyed me. The next day I watched episode 4 and 5 and the show still annoyed me. And I almost had stopped watching it at this point but I thought maybe I was not seeing something that directly was there right in front of my eyes. So I thought to myself, You are only watching one single more episode, and when it still annoys you, you will stop watching MLP! Episode 6 (Boast Busters) actually was much better than all the episodes before combined! I entered the show at a point when the season 2 finale was about to air in America. I watched the first season in less than one week, and the rest of the show in the following 3 weeks. I like this show, I enjoyed most of the episodes and I only skipped some of the Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes that really annoyed me. I don‘t like this group of characters. As well as I don‘t like Spike, even though his strongest episode is amongst my Top 5. I don‘t think that everything was good that was done to make the show more appearable to the older target group in the second season.
But I am a Brony, I love MLP, JUICEY!
Follow the little pink CUPCAKE!!!
