The End of Sex and Violence

I don‘t know how often I already mentioned it, but I love puppet comedy. Why is that so? Well, pretty easy: because of The Muppet Show and the Sesamestreet. I mean the Sesamestreet of course was part of my childhood. I loved Ernie and Bert, Kermit, the Cookie Monster (whose actual name is Sid) not so much Elmo (honestly I hate Elmo), Big Bird (Bibo in Germany) and this Vampire Count. Count von Count I think. I still make jokes when it comes to counting like this: „1, 2, 3, 4 – 4 sometings! HA HA HA HA HA *thunder* *lightening* *bats flying around*“ (mehr…)

I wanted to write about the new Narnia movies for a long time actually. It first started when I first saw the original BBC serial of „The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe“ or so. I found it on DVD for just a Euro. And I really love the way the BBC made the books into this TV-show. I knew it from my childhood. I loved this show when I was a kid. I guess when they first got aired in Germany I was like 6 or 7. Must have been in the beginning of the 1990ies or so.

Well I had not seen the new Narnia movies so I tried to borrow them from the library one by one. Often they have the new stuff really late so it took me until this week until I finally saw the latest one. The first thing I noticed, it was not done by Disney anymore. While the 20th Century Fox intro was running I already sung (without knowing anything about the 3rd Narnia) something like „This movie will suck, it’s not done by Disney, la la la la, and 20th Century Fox is 75 now, happy anniversary!“ I had no idea how right I was. I mean the CGIs are cheap and everything actually looks like a big-budget TV movie. At least the movie featured all known actors. Even this ugly girl who is less ugly now!

I mean, you often hear, that license takers are forced to do movies even if they don‘t want to just to fulfill certain contracts. It often happens. So they take some money, put in the least effort they can and you name it. It is really a cheek because the first two Narnias really rocked my balls off. Especially the first one was outstanding compared to the BBC serial.

Well I wanna say it with the words of the horse in the Rem & Stimpy show: „No, I do not like it!“

Which mansion? Aaaaah that mansion, you should have „mansioned“ it!

When Halo first came up I was like 14 or so. I was not a gamer but I was interested in videogames though. I used to buy a monthly PC gaming magazin simply called „PC Games“. It still exists btw. This was the first time I read about the Halo universe. And actually the last time. But I found that concept of a FPS in this futuristic setting on a giant halo in space quite interesting. But then Halo was moved from PC to Microsoft’s new gaming console XBox. When it comes to consoles, I was and still am a Nintendo-fanboy. So buying another console and one even done by Microsux was a no-go! Even though Halo was a game that really digged me in a certain way.

The other day I stumpled upon the „Halo Legends“ DVD. After „Batman: Gothic Knight“ and „Animatrix“ it is the third attempt to expand a universe with animes. Fortunatly all three attemps were a success! I mean, I could write a long text about all bits in „Halo Legends“. But I will only write about the bit done by Toei Animation: „Odd One Out“. I laughed my ass off!!! (mehr…)

Snugglelizing the World

Besides the stress I have with learning for my exams in May (I will finish my vocational training this year) I fortunatly still have time left to watch DVDs. My latest achievment is the complete series of Doctor Snuggles.

You know… this series really was part of my earliest childhood. For the first time I saw it when I was very young. The series was produced in 1979 and, I am not kidding, it is still running on German TV. And why? I‘m gonna tell you: (mehr…)

Happy to You Log Pony!

I must make a confession. I love the Powerpuff Girls. But you will agree with me. Sometimes it is more than meets the eye. TRANSFORMERS!!! … uh… no. For the first time I saw the Powerpuff Girls in the Saturday morning cartoon reel in the late 90ies. I was confused… How could something that female, that sweet, that colorful and bright rock so much?!?!?!

The basic concept of the series is: 3 super powered kindergarden girls save the world from evil. The combination of the design that is inspired by classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the 60ies, a special sort of humour not suitable (and yet not understandable) by kids and a mid-90ies Drum‘n'Bass Soundtrack this series still makes this show to one of my alltime fav cartoon shows. Looking back to last week when I wrote about Astro Boy, the Powerpuff Girls even share some similarities with him. Astro Boy also looks rather innocent but is a born fighting machine. (mehr…)

Rust in Peace

Normally it doesn‘t mean any good when Americans lay they hands on original Japanese stuff. Maybe you heard that James Cameron is planning to do a live action version of „Battle Angel Alita“ which actually is my favorite manga series. I am terribly afraid that Mr „I make shitty films and earn millions with them“ Cameron ruins it. In 2009 20th Century Fox released the new Astro Boy CGI movie. Completly produced in Hong Kong but planned, written and directed by Americans. I just saw this movie for the first time this morning and I was curious how they realised it.

I see that the work of Sam Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba, is really important for many people in the USA. I mean, not only was Astro Boy the first anime TV-series ever, but also the first anime series to run in the USA. I know both Astro Boy, Kimba and even Speed Racer from my childhood. But „Speed Racer“ is best example for a classic anime series that was flawfully made into a live action movie. The Wachowski brothers thought they could make it great because their matrix trilogy worked so well. Well, even though there are many German actors in this movie, basically the chimpanzee is the best one in this movie.

But I wanted to talk about the Astro Boy movie. Why do I always lose focus??? Must be my non-functional brain :D Anyways, I was a bit suspicious. Could this work… Astro Boy is an all time classic. First of all it was a good decision to make a CGI movie and not a live action movie. I mean, there are so many CGI movies out there. I will cover that topic in a later article. And god knows, Astro Boy totally drowned among them. Til I saw the DVD in the library yesterday, I had totally forgotten about this movie. No question that I had to borrow this movie!!! (mehr…)

Where the wild books are

Saturday is my favorite day in the week. No school, no work, just spare time. Some of this time I always spend in our local public library that is just bout 5 minutes by foot away from my apartment. The other I day I borrowed the movie „Where the wild Things are“. I heard about this movie when it was released last year and I heard about the original picture book it is based on. Well, I loved this movie, it is a typical Spike Jonze movie!!! Great stuff. I knew that I knew the original book from somewhere an then I remembered that there was a short spoof scene of it in a certain Simpsons episode. But I had a small doubt in my head about the picture book. So I decided to go to the library and check if the book was available there. I thought it shouldn‘t be too hard to find it. They have hundreds of picture books there. (mehr…)

The Incredible (or incredibly stupid) Crash Dummies

„Mama, I want that toy on TV! It comes with a video! Please Mama, I never get any toys… Look how cool they are, when you hit the button they fall apart, let’s go to the toy shop and buy it. It’s not expensive. I never get toys, you don‘t love me, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!“

OK, I admit, I don‘t remember exactly how this conversation between me and my mom was, but it was at least almost like that. Yes, I had some of this stupid toys… All they could do was exploding when you hit the button. Hey but there was a VHS cassette with the toy… I think I watched this video like 4 billion times. I dunno what happened with it but it would be nice to see it again. But it is hard to find information on this series on the internet… and when you look for pictures and type in „Incredible Crash Dummies TV“ you get a picture of Stan Lee on page 8…

OK, here we go, IMDB saved my life again IMDBARONI. This article actually is about the video I had when I was young and here is the Wikipedia-Article about it CRASHTESTERONI

And sometimes it is that easy: www.crashdummies.info. OK, let’s see what we have here. You can now watch me collecting information for a blog, normally I do it before I start but I want to do it differently this time. OK, it is a nice site, indeed, but it lacks information and pictures to the TV series.

Anyways, this video was my first encounter with computer animated TV. Looking back the animation wasn‘t that good and the toys were stupid, too. But as far as I remember the video was funny and fitted the style of the toys really well. btw: yes, the picture show the original toy with video that I also had when I was a kid. The picture comes from eBay.

More than meets the Arse…

Oh well, the 80ies. What a wonderful time for cartoon fans. Cartoon series were still handmade by Korean kids, German dubbing was aweful and we loved it back then.

Now looking back to my childhood I see how bad these shows actually were. The stories sucked, the animation sucked… in fact everything sucked. Having multiple plotholes seemed to be more like a concept than a problem. I recently started to collect 80ies and early 90ies cartoon shows on DVD, starting with the amazing „Garfield & Friends“ (which is awesome compared to the rest) and going on with „Defenders of the Earth“. The last things I added to my DVD library were the German DVDs to „The Transformers“. (mehr…)

Sesamstraat

Aah, the Sesame Street, or Sesamstraße as it is called in Germany. One of the first TV-shows I ever watched, besides Die Sendung mit der Maus. Some weeks ago, I saw the Dutch version of it, called Sesamstraat, on Dutch TV. You know, here in Western Germany we receive some Dutch TV channels via cable TV. And via sat you can watch them all I guess… Anyways, there are so many different international versions of the Sesame Street. Of course I did know that there was a Dutch version, but I had never seen it before. I was curious and watched a complete episode. (mehr…)
